The Carlson Print Group originated in the warehouse district of Minneapolis under the name of Hoppe Printing. Cousins, Jed and Jason Carlson, purchased this small, sheetfed printing company in June 1996. By March 1997, they had implemented a new customer focused philosophy, re-branded the company as 'The Carlson Print Group' and moved to a larger facility. CPG installed state-of-the-art equipment at its new facility in Bloomington, MN, where it continues to do business today. In the ensuing years from 1997-2000, CPG doubled in size, receiving recognition from American Printer Magazine as one of America's Fastest Growing Printers.

American Spirit Graphics, looking to penetrate the sheetfed print market, (where they previously had no presence), and aware of Carlson's superior "technical knowledge", purchased The Carlson Print Group in January 2000. The acquisition has helped ASG make their own transition into the now-ubiquitous digital world of print production. Both companies, however, continue to maintain their own strong corporate image in the print industry.
