Cutting-edge demonstration boxes showcase integrated premium print techniques

As Carlson Print Group continues to invest in cutting-edge technology, we are also dreaming up new ways to show our customers the innovative, eye-catching print techniques we can produce with our presses, including the new Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 – an eight-color press with a double coater.
An improved, unique press configuration delivers eight inks along with a double coater that allows for Colour foil and Cast & Cure applications all in one pass. Traditionally, combining treatments requires the piece to be run multiple times through the press. Our clients can now choose from multiple treatments in one pass, saving valuable time and reducing costs. The ability to explore more flexible options opens up endless creative possibilities while offering greater flexibility and control.

To highlight this game-changing advancement, we’ve built a set of demonstration boxes, each featuring the same striking image produced with various combinations of coatings and techniques that can be applied in one press pass.

In this single project, we showcase the wide range of sensory connections packaging can make with customers, boosting brand awareness and strengthening product loyalty. The outer box is 16pt C1S 100% recycled board stock, which includes a minimum of 90% from a post-consumer waste source or de-inked recycled fiber. Here, we’ll take you through our process of creating this stunning marketing piece.

BOX ONE: TRADITIONAL PRINT METHOD
The first box displays traditional print methods, using a four-color process and an aqueous coating. This piece provides a baseline for the standard print that is typically used on most projects and can be compared to the other treatments applied on the different boxes in the set. While standard four-color printing is bright and colorful, it is just the beginning of what can be accomplished.

  • Four-color process
  • Aqueous coating
BOX TWO: DYNAMICS OF TWO COATINGS
This second example shows what happens when simply applying two coatings in one pass. While it does not change the time for production or efficiency, it delivers that little something extra with an impressive finish and dimension. Using both gloss and matte coatings, you can highlight various elements on the piece to create contrast and definition.

BOX THREE: SHINE WITH TEXTURE
The soft-touch coating on this box adds an extra sensation to the experience! Not only does it look good, but it feels good to hold in your hands. The smooth feel of the soft-touch coating contrasts with the gloss UV and Color Foil to really make different elements stand out. The highlight is the gold lettering against the smooth matte surface. • Four-color process
  • Two coatings: Gloss UV and Soft Touch Colour Foil™
BOX FOUR: A DRAMATIC PRISMATIC EFFECT
The next effect takes print to a whole new level. Our Rapida 106 has an integrated unit that can apply a Cast & Cure (C&C) prismatic effect. While C&C is not a new technique, it adds an impressive element to the box that raises the impact of your brand. There are various patterns to choose from, and they will entice your customers to pick up a package and explore further. Click here for a video example of how it catches the light.
