Make a 3-D impression with 2-D specialty print effects

3/15/2022

You only have two dimensions to make a three-dimensional impression.

Today's cinema, animation, and television productions use innovative special effects driven by advances in technology. Collateral, collectibles, and merchandise related to these kinds of projects need to match their tone and action.
With specialty print, it's a breeze to pop graphics off the page and into the attention of your audience, mirroring today's media. Think about memorabilia such as baseball cards, film posters, and comic books that replicate the big screen mood and excitement. Small high-quality runs related to big media and larger-than-life figures can create valuable pieces that become tomorrow's collectibles.
It comes down to applying specialty print techniques in a focused and deliberate way. Each substrate, ink, and application can be used to convey different experiences and evoke a range of emotions. But they are not interchangeable.
Choose your specialty print effects based first on what you want to accomplish, how effectively they convey your message to your ideal audience, and then budget for success. Today we'll be looking at the staying power of lenticular printing.
Picture

Lenticular technology is the window to a world of difference.

Lenticular technology creates images that appear to move, morph and jump off the page—vivid 3D imagery that prompts customers to engage with your design or product. Images are layered to give the illusion of depth and perspective. Unlike two-dimensional design, the lenticular effect allows graphics to appear more realistic.
Animation.
A series of sequential, still images come together to create an animation similar to a short movie clip. This effect is ideal for mimicking the body movement of a real actor or an animated character.
Flip.
By alternating between multiple images, the printed images continuously vanish and reappear. This effect is an excellent way to demonstrate instant "cause-and-effect" comparisons or gif-like moments in a film, television show, advertisement, or a ball game.
Morph.
The morph effect changes one image into another to create the illusion of transformation or illustrate a "before and after" scenario. This powerful effect can convey the transformation of a character or the destruction of a city. It is perfect for conveying pivotal plot points or a character's progress.
Zoom.
Lenticular zoom animation is an effect that causes images to jump out and back. Create a collectible album jacket, ticket stub, movie poster, or comic book cover by adding a simple animated effect on an ultra-thin lens that makes the product become more valuable as it ages.

When people think about collectibles, finding old memorabilia in mint condition comes to most minds. Specialty printing can create products and media such as magazine and comic book covers, dust jackets, and CD wraps that could be worth a mint in years to come.
